The Side View Radar is an object detection system that alerts the driver to any obstruction at the vehicle’s sides and blind spots.
The Radar’s sensors instantly detect the presence of any object or person, and the LED on the corresponding side illuminates to alert the driver. If the driver signals a turn on that side, the indicator flashes, and the buzzer audibly warns the driver of the potential hazard.
When paired with an in-cabin monitor and side cameras, the Radar’s detection alert is displayed on the monitor as a warning bar over the respective camera’s image. If the driver signals a turn, the monitor audibly alerts the driver to the hazard, which is now detected by the radar’s sensors and visible on the monitor.
Understanding Detection
The Side View Radar’s sensors emit electromagnetic energy, creating an area of detection. Any object or person within that area will reflect the energy toward the sensor, allowing the system to detect its presence instantly.
Key factors such as size, material, surface area, shape, and angle determine the ease of detection. Larger, smooth surfaces facing a sensor at a closer distance will be better detected than uneven, small, and distant objects. For example, compare a nearby truck to a distant bush.
In their default configuration, the side view sensors have a detection range of 7 m (~23ft) forward, 7 m rearward, 3.5 m (~11.5 ft) outward, 7° upward, and 7° downward. The sensors cannot detect objects within 0.2 m (8 in) or closer. All readings stop within that distance; the vehicle CANNOT go further without risk of collision.
