A walk-around test should be performed regularly to verify the system's proper function and familiarize the operator with the detection zone. Inspections should be more frequent when the vehicle operates in a particularly dirty or harsh environment or when the operator suspects the system may have been damaged.
The walk-around test should be conducted with two people, one in the cab to verify the system’s proper alerting and another walking through the detection field.
- Clean the sensors of any dirt, mud, snow, ice, or debris accumulation.
- Inspect the attached wiring and cabling to verify they are secured and undamaged.
- Inspect the sensors and control box and verify they are securely attached.
-
The area near the sensors should be clear of obstacles.
-
- If the LEDs or monitor are alerting, there are objects near the sensors that will interfere with the test.
- Move the vehicle to perform the test.
-
- The person performing the test should walk from the edge to the center of the detection zones, covering the entire detection area. Meanwhile, the person in the cab should note when the sensors detect the presence.
The people performing the test should discuss the observed detection zone so that the system may be used appropriately.
