The Rear View Radar is an object detection system that instantly detects any obstruction at the vehicle's rear, audibly alerting the driver to its presence and distance.
When paired with an in-cabin monitor and rear camera, the rear radar's detection zones overlay the rear camera's image, providing visual and audible alerts from the monitor and functioning as a highly responsive backup camera.
Understanding Detection
The Rear View Radar’s sensor emits electromagnetic energy, creating an area of detection where any object or person will reflect the energy toward the sensor. This allows the system to instantly detect the presence and distance to an obstruction within its range. When multiple obstructions are in range, the system will prioritize the one closest to the vehicle to avoid collisions.
Key factors such as size, material, surface area, shape, and angle will affect the ease of detection. Larger, smooth surfaces facing the sensor at a closer distance will be better detected than uneven, small, and distant objects. For example, compare a nearby truck to a distant bush.
In its default configuration, the rear radar’s detection zone is 10 m (33 ft) long and 2 m (6.5 ft) wide, separated into five subzones of 2 m (6.5 ft) each. The length of each sub-zone can be independently configured to a maximum detection zone of 40 m (132 ft). The sensor cannot detect obstructions within 0.25 meters (10 inches) or closer. All readings will STOP within that distance; the vehicle CANNOT go further without risk of collision.
